Today the word narcissist gets tossed around so much that people assume it’s just someone who simply posts too many selfies or someone who appears too full of themselves. But a true narcissist is someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).
In psychological terms, Narcissistic Personality Disorder isn’t the same as self-confidence or being self-absorbed. But rather, it is a mental health condition which has a wide spectrum. Here are some symptoms and traits of NPD:
grandiose sense of self-importance
sense of entitlement
lack of empathy and consideration for other people
being in love with their self-image
have an inflated opinion of themselves
frequently demeans, intimidates, bullies, or belittles others
patterns of self-centered, arrogant thinking behavior and attitudes
envy of others or a belief that others are envious of them
having an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of other people
takes advantage of others
extremely sensitive and react badly to even the slightest criticisms, disagreements, or perceived slights
vindictive, condescending, cocky, selfish, patronizing, demanding, controlling, and manipulative
a bully
needing excessive admiration and praise
expecting special treatment due to perceived superiority
exaggerating achievements and talents
being preoccupied with fantasies about power, success, and beauty
has a big ego
